A is right i think. i originally thot D also but it doesnt sound right.

desert tortoise because it is not as hard as to make burrowing difficult or as soft as to cause tunnels to collapse.

i think D is wrong for two reasons
1) the second "as" is extra
2) "to do something" is not really a noun phrase here. as adj. as should be followed by direct noun. ==> again, i am not sure, it just doesnt sound right.

This book is not as good to read. ==> i am sure this is correct. I never heard "this book is not as good as to read". sound awdward!

A is good and conveys the correct meaning.

just my two cents.

Thanks~ I got your point. But one more question here.

This sentence "This book is not as good to read."   You said this sentence is a right version, and I totally agree. But what is the function of "as" here?

嗯……我跟LZ感觉也一样~~The grantic soil is (not) as hard as to make burrowing difficult.
这两比较对象起码不对等感觉……意思也像LZ说的很奇怪……至于to make sth. adj.能不能做名词成分 我已经凌乱了……同求NN解释……

as……as的用法我明白啦~~~谢谢LZ!!!

And if this is the case, then this construction would be totally different from "as adj. as...", since the first "as" here functions as a preoposition that modifies the following adjective.

我记得语法笔记上说as……as的前一个as是在做副词修饰中间的形容词哇~~~

hmmm... the function of "as". i am not sure.

but i think it is a comparison but omit some bits.
for example,
A said: Book A is awesome, I love reading it!.
B said: well, Book B is not as awesome (as Book A), I wasted time.

it is totally fine to ignore as book A in this context because it is intuitive. you are comparing two books.

BINGO~  D is also wrong because "A is as adj. as B" structure requires parellelism.

I went for a nap, and I think now I am a little bit sure about this question.
Look at both sentences:  "The soil is not as hard to borrow."   "The soil is not as hard as a brick."
For the blue "as", both are adverbs, modifying the following adjective "hard". These two blue "as", in some way, have the same meaning: we can replace them with words such as "that", "too", words that express the meaning "to some degree".

But for the pruple "as" in the second sentence, it funcitons as a preposition or a conjunction, depending what you are trying to compare.
For instance, "The soil is not as hard as a brick." What I am trying to compare are the two things, two objects, so the second "as" here is a preposition, and this is find.
Alternatively, "We give as many foods as they want." Here, what I am trying to compare are "we give" and "they want", two behaviors, so we need a conjunction.

And the crucial point is that it is just the second "as" (the purple one) requires us to make the structure "A is as adj. as B" to be parallel.

Then, back to the orginal sentence I posted yesterday. Choice D:
"The soil is not as hard as to make it difficult to borrow......"
Surely, these two parts are not parallel, and this answer must be wrong. but if we omit the second "as", I think this sentence can be corrected.

嗯~我觉得我明白了~都在楼上的英文里了- -
哈哈

我觉得是这样。在A is as adj. as B这个结构里,最要紧的是第二个as
第二个as的出现就表明了,你是在对比两件事物,那就必须保证这个A和B是可比的,是同种的

The book is not as good to read. 这个as就是为了强调good的程度,而to read是我要说的动作。
而The book is not as good as that one. 第一个as还是为了强调good的程度,而第二个as就表明我是在比较两个东西。

那具体到The soil is not as hard as to make it difficult to burrow....
这个第二个as的出现,明显就应该表明我是要比较两个东西了,可是"to make it difficult to burrow",暂且不管它是不是名词结构,它和那个soil都不是一个概念,不可比。这个才是最最主要的错误点~

而说到这个"to make it adj. to do"我觉得,做名词成分并不好,但是我不确定。所以以下内容,不一定对哈。。。。。。。。。。
我的理由是:这个to表达了一个目的,这个make又暗含了一个动作对象,所以这个结构应该是有一个逻辑主语的吧?~
比如我们经常说To make the classroom cleaner, Jim swept the floor. 这样Jim的出现就明显的说明了前头那个词的逻辑主语是谁了~
