答案是E， 但it指的是owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land， 也就是说主语是一样的。为什么不能省去呢？
变成as  was of earlier generations

记得白用语法里提到过“比较从句的主语与主句主语相同，可以省略。”

it的指代。。。OG说得很清楚的啊。。。goal被省略了。。

你说的假设对，但问题谁没有你说的选项啊

这几个选项里当然应该选E了

再说主语是这么复杂的分词并列式，再加上有宾语，不省略比省略强
