答案E的than比较结构为什么可以省略do？

ETS不是强调严谨和完整吗？

究竟比较结构中什么情况可以省略动词，什么时候不行？我都弄糊涂了。

补助动词主要是为了强调主谓比较，避免可能出现的宾语参与比较，当比较的后半部分出现代词而指代主语十分明确时，往往省略助动词，因为代词已经明确了比较对象。

其实这里和2楼的看法不冲突，比较的是civilization和civilizations，复数的civilizations其实相当于those，但是，由于前面没有出现过复数的civilizations，所以直接用一个复数名词替代。正如我们平时看到的that/those，他们都可以用实义名词替代，而不必用代词，用代词，要么是为了防止语言的单调，要们就是有语法或逻辑的需要。
