E项it前还有个with不要忽略了。with引导的独立主格逻辑主语不一定和主句主语一致，所以指哪个都有可能。

我的理解是 主语the gains 谓语 reflect  宾语 growing confidence
                     to ……rather to 表目的 中间加了一个what 引导的插入语

我的看法是，这里的to 不能表示目的，整个的句子意思就改变了。最好的意思是后面的从句是解释confidence的内容，而如果用to 来表示目的的话，confidence就是完全多余的了

我不明白OG上的一些解释：
1. B选项中what 为什么不能代替that ?
2. 为什么用rather to come 就是 dose not complete the second part of the sentence idiomatically?
3.OG说E中的 with it instead coming "ungrammatical"的原因it 指代不明嘛？

我逐项解释：
1， 应该是用which来指代才对
2，两个逗号之间是插入语，拿掉后再来看，句子就是 avoid the recession rather to come...绝对是错误的
3，it指代不明是应该它前面有多个单数名词。有可能知道economy也有可能是recession. 所以歧义。

what在句中是要充当成分的，所以不完整；
rather do是比较，前面的谓语动词呢？谁和come比较，所以错；
最后是过去分词结尾，两种情况，1 与句子逻辑主语一致，考主谓一致，句子主语是the gains；2 作结果状语。

我的问题是in the economy to avoid the recession, what（that) many feared earlier in the year, rather to come
OG的解释说that可以replace what 。就是说原来位置的what换成that呗 可是 that又不能引导非限制性定语从句 而且that后引导的从句逻辑意思上来说也不能做confidence的同位语 就很困惑换成that干什么用呢
我有可能钻og解释的牛角尖了
