The lecture mainly talks about the adverse effects caused by salvage logging in forests. Also the speaker indicates that the economic success brought by salvage logging is questionable. These views directly contradicted what had been stated in the passage.
First, the natural decompsition in wood creats the more suitable enviornment for the fresh growth. The speaker points out that the nutrients created in the natureal decomposition will facilitate the growth and proviade favorable conditions for the livings in the forest. This directly opposes the view in the passage that the salvage logging can leave new space for new livings to help the recovery of the forest.
Second, it is true that the decaying wood can generate a habitat preferred by the insects, however, these insects will not cause huge damage to the forest based on the past experience. Plus, such a habitat also promote the growth of the forest contributors like birds, which will prey on the insects to protect the forest from damaging. So the benefit of killing insects from salvage logging listed in the passage is also contradicted.
Third, the ecnomic profit brought by the salvage logging is small temporary. What is more, it will cost more to complete the salvage logging because the expensive equipments, like helicopters, have to be used. Meanwhile, the jobs created will be obtained by the experienced and well-educated outsiders, rather than the local residents. Thus what was stated in the passage is also not convincing. |
