Except VS Except for (它们有区别吗？)

你说except后面跟的是同类事物，是指except后面的名词和主句的主语是同类事物吗？还是和哪个成分是同类事物？比如这个例子里，except 后面是 in the domain 吧， 那应该和 on the islande 是同类事物，不是和主语吧，所以我对except后面跟同类事物这句话不是很理解，究竟是“谁和谁"同类呢？你的理解呢？

我觉得这个in the domain不是和on he island同类的，这句话的意思是说: M是a British colony，但people didn't speak English in any domains except in that("the domains" can be understood) of administration and teaching，所以排除的是在人们在生活中不说英语的domains, 即administration and teaching这两个方面，而这两方面都包含在众多domains里面~~

不知道这样说对不对哈~~

同时我也想问有没有人可以贴出关于比较except和except for的差异性的例句呢~~谢谢~
