向各位高手请教一下OG12-5

Diabetes, together with its serious complications, ranks as the nation's third leading cause of death, surpassed only by heart disease and cancer.
我有两个问题：
1、这个地方的ranks为什么不用成is ranked,我理解为应该是“被列为”？
2、OG中对“together with its serious complications”的解释是：the phrase following diabetes is set off by a pair of commas, indicating that it is off by a pair of commas, indicating that it is descriptive information that may be dropped from the sentence, it is not a part of the subject.以后我怎样可以判断它属于，还是不属于主语？

rank 可以作为及物动词也可以是非及物动词，所以用被动和非被动都是可以的，但是根据这题用主动好一些，因为重点不是放在他被列为，GMAT出题句子往往用被动语态时，动词的作用者必须要清楚说明才行，如果是被列为的话，那么rank 的作用者是谁呢？作用者unnamed。

如果这题改成Diabetes together with its serious complications，注意逗号没有了，那么就用 rank，因为这题逗号把Diabetes 把 together with its serious complications 分开了，所以together with its serious complications 相当于插入语，去掉插入语不会改变句子的原意。
不知道我讲清楚没~呵呵

我觉得这个diabetes的rank是作为一个客观事实的真理来讲的，所以用一般现在时哈，还有主动优于被动。
together那句应该是个插入语吧？

看到你的解释很详细，觉得很受用。
By the way，我留言的意图是，我觉得有一个地方我和你的观点不同，
即使去掉逗号，变成了Diabetes together with its serious complications，它的谓语动词仍然是单数，因为together with 要随前一致，则依照这道题，谓语动词仍然要和diabetes一致还是使用单数。
