楼主没仔细看，C中wordy的是to seriously to study，应该是不定式接不定式的问题，应该说的不是副词。

搜索该题找到的本帖，也觉得那个副词修饰study是不是更和逻辑呢？不过结合上文内容，之前应该也有涉猎，到了1900才。。。。正经的开始。。。也不能说完全说不通，不过觉得别扭，至少从中文表达的逻辑不是很舒服。关于副词位置，敬等NN高见。

个人觉得这道题目是在考察副词Almost和Seriously的位置。
副词必须紧跟所修饰的词，GMAT中非常看重副词的位置，但是由于中英文的不同，我们经常容易把副词的地方放错。
Almost 中文经常说差不多到1900年，貌似almost是修饰到-Until，实际上英文中almost应该修饰1900。因此可以排除D选项。
Seriously 作副词有三个解释：严肃地，严重地，特别地。个人认为这句话中应该翻译成严肃地开始研究。所以seriously修饰的是开始，而不是严肃地研究。这样就只有E选项了。
此外，我觉得ETS貌似喜欢Begin doing而不是Begin to do，不过是不是这样还不确定。
