我只会解释第二题，一般形容时间的流逝，或者是随着人变老，都是强调的一个时间过程，而非一个时间点，所以as 在这方面比when（形容时间点）更加合适些。比如： AS time went by,.......
另外， one  legacy of ...... is the realization 比 to realize 在意思上更加贴切些，这个campaign 留下来的遗产应该是已经实现了的一个什么成就或突破。 而to realize 表示目的，即遗产目的在于去实现什么。。。说不通的。
