5-6年phd是一个大的commitment and investment。如果侥幸survive下来, 还要fight for a job。 然后呢, 就是fight with referees, fight with co-authors, and fight for tenure。。。 。。 -- by 会员 xiaotian24 (2011/5/12 11:24:32)
There's nothing to lose except for some free time.
It depends. Lot of people (including myself and friends) had opportunities but choose to do a PhD. Some people don't like the works offered to undergrads and that is why they do a phd. IBD and consulting are both people-relationship jobs. They can get nasty, especially if your clients are Chinese (or worse, government related). Some people rather spend the night thinking about research (academia) or pondering about trading techniques (phd-industry) rather than spend the night drinking or kareoking (i give up, i can't even spell it) with their clients.
PS: Even if you start in states, for those people jobs quite some chinese either get send back to china or put to deal with chinese clients overseas.
That said, if you like to spend the night with your clients drinking, kareoking, or in onsen, PhD is not appropriate.
