目的状语本身没有任何问题，但是，这道题如果连接目的状语，其主语岂不成了shields了。我们可以说‘某某人作xx，是in order to xx’，但是却不可能说‘一个桌子，是为了保护人类’。逻辑上不通。

TO PROTECT作为目的状语本身没问题 , 但是不定式做定语要紧跟修饰的名词,这里不符合,何况C中的表达有伴随意味,说明作用.

不定式好像不太用于修饰这么长的句子，一般都是修饰单一的动作或东西。分词短语就可以放在句首和句尾来修饰前面所有或者前面单一的主语。

另外ETS解释，to protect是不完整的。

看了各位的解释，自己又想了想，再参照前面关于不定式和分词的讨论。我是这样理解的：

在这个题中，

1。如同stoneren的解释，to do如果充当目的状语是说不大通的，因为逗号前的句子是一个表述，只是告诉我们某个东西是什么，而不是一个动作或行为。

2。to do 在这里若紧跟句子，前面没有逗号，是可以的，可做定语成分，如同tulipmontreal所说：“不定式做定语要紧跟修饰的名词,这里不符合”。

3。og解释中说，如果改成“used to protect"就是对的。看各位的解释之前不明白，现在明白了，如同第一条所述，逗号前的句子不是一个动作或行为，所以要加“used”才能做状语，才有“用来保护……”的意思。所以og说“to protect”不完整。
