关于比较中主语省略的问题

比较从句的主语和主句主语相同，到底是省略了主语还是AS/THAN做了主语？
eg: 218.
Only seven people this century have been killed by the great white shark, the man-eater of the movies—less than those killed by bee stings.
A. movies—less than those
B. movies—fewer than have been
C. movies, which is less than those
D. movies, a number lower than the people
E. movies, fewer than the ones

答案选B没有问题，不过prep的解释是说than做代词做比较从句的主语，可是白勇语法说当比较的2个句子主语相同时可以省略，而这里的主语相同都是people，所以我想问到底是主语省略还是than做主语？

My opinion:the noun do have to repeat after “than” because it is understood for us.
