我猜也许是因为D在moisture之后有个that，在某种程度上强调了moisture，也就带着强调了touristis?

我觉得D    because of moisture that was exhaled by tourists   那个that从句起到强调后面的作用
而E  because moisture exhaled by tourists  

虽然都是by tourists但是不同  

只是有点感觉  但是求NN正确解答啊~

分析了半天，有点想法，觉得有点收获，大家参考下：

(D) because of moisture that was exhaled by tourists raising the humidity within them to levels so high as to make the salt from the stone crystallize
(E) because moisture exhaled by tourists had raised the humidity within them to such levels that salt from the stone was crystallizing
感觉还是句子结构的问题，OG这样说也有道理的
D里面--》that后面整个都是平级的结构，我们把定语从句提出了看，把定语从句的that换成所指代的moisture，读读看什么感觉：moisture was exhaled by tourists raising the humidity within them to levels so high ...

E里面--》我们把整个原因状语从句提出了，moisture exhaled by tourists had raised the humidity within them to such levels that salt from the stone was crystallizing
exhaled by tourist是个分词定语，修饰成分划掉他
moisture  had raised the humidity within them to such levels that salt from the stone was crystallizing
这样them就自然指代回主句中的chambers去了

由此感觉，代词回指肯定倾向于指代句子结构中同级别的成分，或者更高一级的成分

不太可能宾语的位置上出现一个them指代的是主语的定语从句里面的名词成分。
