2)D:  as is a preposition here. as a group to modify"letters"

E:  make his letters a group .. a group is n2

thus the meaning in D and E is different. D emphasizes the "the rival of the best novels of the time",however E emphasizes " a group".

Apparently, the meaning of D is what the author intends to convey .

从D的逻辑来看是强调letters，那么相应的rival也应该为复数吧？
