Accounting Doctoral Program RankingsBased on Research Productivity of Program Graduates http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1574502 AccountingHorizons, Forthcoming Abstract: This paper presents rankingsof accounting doctoral programs based on theresearch productivity ofeach institution’sgraduates in theyears immediately following their graduation. We use two timeperiods for analysis: the first three years after graduation andthe first six years after graduation. We extend previousdoctoral program ranking literature by expandingrankings of accountingdoctoral programs with specificrankings for topical areas(accounting information systems (AIS), audit, financial,managerial, and tax) and methodologies (analytical, archival, andexperimental). We show that rankings for topical and methodological areasdiffer significantly fromrankingsproduced using methodologies that create a singular doctoral program ranking. These results emphasize theimportance of considering topicaland methodological areas when assessing doctoral program research strengths. These rankings should be of value to Ph.D. program applicants, administrators of academic programs, and industry – such asadministrators of programs like theAccounting Doctoral Scholarsprogram, KPMG Ph.D. Project,prospective Ph.D. students, and public accountingfirms.

We rank Ph.D. programs (faculties) both adjusting and notadjusting for program (faculty) size. We provide rankings bothwithout regards to when individuals graduated and for individualsgraduating during three consecutive sub-periods: pre-1982,1982-1991 and 1992-2001. We first provide rankings without regardsto teaching or research area. After dichotomizing individuals intothose whose teaching/research area is financial versusnon-financial we provide additional rankings focusing onnon-financial research areas.
