                                  另一个是“what was" is awkward and unnecessary?????怎么理解呢？

if we put (no less.. than & what was into the original sentence)
thus it will be:

The use of the new technology to revitalize some of the classic recorded performances of the pre-LP era has been( no less remarkable than/What was as remarkable as ) the development of the compact disc

we will see: the use of "no less remarkable than" is clear and right
however ：what was is unnecessary. as remarkable as is enough.
