若是此提的THEM非指students, 就會出現問題

但是雖然them有模糊之嫌, 他所想要指代的也是從文法角度說的通的students, NN們大可不必如此鑽牛角尖--我也常常犯這個問題呢!

说实话，这个也是问了我老婆才彻底清楚的（她英语专业八级上了90分）

把C填进去，变成了Students in the metropolitan school district lack of math skills is so large as to be difficlut to absorb them into a city's economy that becomes ever more dependent on information-based industries.

这句话的主语是谁？Students不可能是主语，students是一个什么都不是的成分，主语是lack，students顶多是修饰lack的。lack是单数，不可能被them指代，所以them只能指代skills.
