Both programs are very competitive to get admitted into.
1. The FE in Viterbi is a new program, established last year
with an emphasis on long distance learning (although they
have on-campus students too), while our program was one
of the earliest program established in late 90's, and has already
been widely recognized in the financial industry.
2. Our program focus on more quantitative skills, especially those
knowledge that have been emphasized in the world of "quants".
3. Our program will have a rigorous training on Math-based finance/econ
subjects, therefore it would be more suitable for those with a solid
background in math. In particular, some good courses in Mathematical
Analysis, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory, and Differential Equations
are extremely desirable.
4. Those who have good background in programming (e.g., C, C++, C#,
SQL, SAS) will benefit a lot from our program, as these skills, together with
the quantitative knowledge they obtain through the course works, will make
them highly marketable in the future job market.
