1 Some people think the government should pay for citizens’ health care and education while others argue that it is not the government’s responsibility. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
With the increasing cost of health care and education, more and more citizens are caring about the issue that whether the government or citizens ourselves should pay the bills.
Some people believe that the government should take the full responsibilities for health care and education. They point out that it is the government’s duty to promote publics’ welfare. Without the access to a good standard of education and medical services with high quality, we cannot get good job or enjoy a better life. The predictable result is the decrease of general level of citizens’ wellbeing, which that everyone does not want to see. What is more, the government has more financial resources to offer social security then single individual, it can provide public education and health care in a more efficient way. Another critical reason why many people think government should pay the bill is that it is a great way to narrow the gap between rich and poor as needy citizens tend to too poor to afford the cost themselves. By collecting more taxes from top earners and allocating the revenue to the people who are suffering on survival, the government can promote the social harmony as a whole.
On the other hand, too much cost of education and health care can also have adverse effects since it would lay a heavy burden on the government. Greek crisis is a vivid example that can illustrate this potential problem to some extent. In addition, free public services usually appeal so many people that public facilities tend to overloaded, which in turn results in a poor quality of services.
From my point of view, I prefer that government should take the large responsibilities of education and health care. While at the same time, there should be alternatives such as private schools or private health insurance for individuals who are able and willing to pay for a better service. |
