There has been a growing concern about the issue whether schools should be responsible only for teaching academic skills and not for teaching ethical and social values. Attitudes toward this statement vary from person to person. Some may agree it, while others are against it. As far as I am concerned, I think that schools ought to bear not only the responsibility for educating academic skills but also the responsibility for teaching ethical and social values because education about social and ethnic values can improve students’ understanding of science and technology and motivate students to learn such complicated knowledge. In the same time, social and ethnical education can help them know which goals are worth and better use their academic skills to become productive and responsible citizens. Moreover, common values, such as cooperation, punctuality, and following rules also play an important role in affecting people’s success.
First, no one can deny the fact that one of the important goals of education is to teach students knowledge and give everyone equal opportunity to succeed in life. Meanwhile, we should not ignore the notion that learning such skills is only an means to our goals, but not the ultimate purpose. Only academic skills can not help students better know the reason they learn such complicated knowledge. As a consequence, it is hard for students to persist in finishing such courses. Education about social values contribute a great deal to answering this question and help them know learning knowledge means a lot to them. For example, respect for science and technology is an important quality of our civilized human being. Science and technology also help define us more than instinct-driven animals. Such education can help them expand their knowledge and broaden their horizon. For instance, Times have changed quickly. In times of rapid change, school may be the best place to learn enough knowledge to adapt to such changes. In this way, students have an idea about the importance of academic skills and know which goals are best.
Second, learning ethnical and social values can help students set their goals and become responsible citizens. It is well known that science and technology are double-edged swords. Indisputably, advance in technology has produced many benefits. For instance, progress in medicine enable us to cure many disease so people could live longer. High productively provide us more material goods and services. Nevertheless, advancement also destory our environment and bring disaster to our life, such as global warming, holes in ozone, and nuclear accidents. Nothing is more whimsical than the fact that gunners use modern technology to shatter men’s bodies, while close at hand, surgeons use it to restore them? No one wants students to become Frankenstins to use their knowledge to destory our planet. Education about social values can help students to keep a balance between making progress in science and preventing its harm to the environment. Furthermore, it can benefit students on their way to success and avoid failure.
Finally, the education about social values have a profound impact on student’s success. To bloom into adults, young students should know how to follow rules, cooperate with others and learn to work. Education about academic skills can not help students face these challenges and better work out solutios to these problems. What’s worse, without such education at schools, students are more likely to become self-centered, individualistic and materialistic. They only focus on their interests and do not care about other’s feeling. Such is these people’s nature that they are willing to sacrifices other’s interest for the sake of their own profits. In the short run, they may achieve what they want, but in the long run, they will lose what they have got and can not be accepted by the society. NBA is a good example. No matter how talented a player is, he is not able to win victory by himself. It is chemistry among teammembers that leads the team to win the champion. If they can cooperate with others and adsorb their good opinion, they will be like people “standing on the shoulders of giants” and increase their likelihood to become successful.
In sum, for the preceding reasons, we can safely draw a conclusion that schools ought to emphasize on education about social and ethical values because such education can help students know why they learn, what goals they should establish and how they realize their goals. |
