求教OG-SC-30的另一个知识点——不定式的用法

很容易就知道答案选C
但是OG关于E的解释说：Although the infi nitive to protect would work if it were not preceded by a comma, it cannot act as a nonrestrictive adjectival phrase modifying items.
这句话的意思是即使把横线前面的逗号去了，to protect也不正确吗？但是我觉得只要把逗号去了to protect读起来完全正确啊？
有谁能给解析下为什么错吗？

偶觉得选E的话这句话的结构是应该就是：animal-hide shields... were essential...to protect warriors...
读来完全通顺啊，没看出来有改变句子重心之嫌疑呀。。。
ps：你说的逻辑主语问题偶不太明白，能再具体下不？

og说的就是 逗号加上就正确。

翻译：尽管不定式to protect，在前面没逗号的情况下也是对的，但是，不定式不可以做为非限定定语去修饰items。

背景知识：1。不定式可以做定语。2。非限定定语的样式都是前面有个逗号：如，done(句末过去分词常坐非限定定语去修饰先行名词） ； 句中逗号+doing（句中可做非限定定语，句末往往做状语）； 逗号+which（满大街都有的非限定定语从句。）
所谓非限定就是说补充作用，有点类似于同位语的作用。
如 He wants to have sex with his classmates, who are female and sexy. (这句话翻译过来就是他愿意和所有同学xx；他的这些同学无一例外都是女的，并且无一例外都很sexy。
限定性：
He wants to have sex with his classmates who are female and sexy. ( 这句话翻译过来就是他只愿意他那些性感的女同学xx，其他同学面谈。

另外看了下薄冰语法，上面明确指出，现在分词，过去分词，都可以做非限定定语，并举了例子；而书中没有提到不定式能做非限定定语，并且没有一个逗号to do 做定语的例子
