答案是A，为什么E不对呢
double和twice用法上怎么区呢？

我觉得是因为 double应该是用来指young adults的数量增加了，只用一个doubling those有指代不详语义不清的嫌疑。而E用了number整个句子的意义就清楚了。

答案是 E 大多数网友给出的解释是 those在这里指代的是人.double和twice后面都应该跟数字,这道题我的疑问是E选项中的句子在整个句子中做什么成分? 状语? 同位语? 独立主格?

答案是A  我知道DE选项有一个错误就是many应该为much,increase是不可数的,但如果many 改成much ,E对不对?还有double 和twice 后面不是应该跟数字(number),跟increase也可以吗?
第二道题 在Manhattan Gmat forum 中 一位staff 给出这样的解释"in this case, you can't use "..., twice as many as...", because that's an appositive modifier. appositives must modify some noun that comes IMMEDIATELY before the comma, which in this case would have to be whatever figure is twice whatever other figure. since no such figure is given, you can't use this construction. "  后面他又给出解释"if you want, you can just memorize this an idiom, but "twice Y" / "X times Y" can definitely be used as an appositive."

他给出的解释我存在疑问, 他的意思是说twice as ... as , twice  y, must modify some noun that comes IMMEDIATELY before the comma,依据他的解释判断第一道题
,答案就不是E了? 因为逗号前没有具体名词!

n this case, you can't use "..., twice as many as...", because that's an appositive modifier. appositives must modify some noun that comes IMMEDIATELY before the comma, which in this case would have to be whatever figure is twice whatever other figure. since no such figure is given, you can't use this construction.

so, A, B or C

by contrast, the -ING FOLLOWED BY A COMMA modifies the entire action of the preceding clause. this is exactly what you want to happen, because the actual rising of the # of people flying first class is what "doubled the increase of...". there's no noun in there that pinpoints this concept, so you have to use a modifier that modifies the entire clause.

是不是可以这样理解：
在第一题中， about 20 percent of young adults used cocaine in 1979, doubling those reported in the 1977 survey. 主语是 20 percent of young adults ，是一个明确的数字，而题目原意也正是这个数字 twice as much as those reported in the 1977 survey.

而在第二题里，是The number ... rose sharply 整个这件事 doubling the increase of the the previous year. 所以用的修饰方式不同。
