答案说选C，我怎么觉得应该选Ｄ。

这道题···首先在整个句子中要保持主语的一致（Drive-ins），所以排除DE，A中less错误，B中than...as...结构显然有误，就只选C了~
希望能有点小帮助~

less不能用来修饰可数名词，结构也很混乱

B.there are fewer than one-quarter as many

fewer修饰可数名词，正确

C.there are fewer than one-quarter of that amount

less和amount不能用来指可数名词，应该用fewer和number
D.the number is less than one-quarter the amount

less和amount不能用来指可数名词，应该用fewer和number

E.it is less than one-quarter of that amount

less和amount不能用来指可数名词，应该用fewer和number

注意：

1.less和amount不能修饰可数名词

2.number是不能用less修饰的，OG上只能用great

C的比较错误：

here are fewer than one-quarter of that amount 句子里面比较的对象不正确。there are 指的是一个具体的事物，而不是一个数字，而 one-quarter of that amount（number）指的是一个数字。一个复数对象和一个数字比是不可比的。

B的质疑解答：

有人质疑B 里面 as many 是as many as...的省略，根据 fewer than和 as many 不能连用排除 B。

歧视不是as many as 结构的省略，as many=a number that is equal to another number，跟 as well, as good 类似，是一个副词，放在句末表程度。如： twice as many（这个as many 甚至可以不翻译）

另：OG 和大全上只有少量 as well 的例子，而 as good,  as many 的例子只有网上才有。以上用法可当 idiom 记。

在GMAT中LESS和FEWER：
           GMAT中可数不可数都用LESS，例外：指人的时候用FEWER
所以基本上不能根据less 和 fewer判断答案
