这一题 A 不对是因为英语动词大部份都是单向的，不像汉语那样是双向的。例如“我去理发”的“我”，可以是理发师也可以是理发顾客。英文动词大部份不能这样的。（唯一常见的例外是 sell。如：Many online sites are selling i-Phones.  I-Phones are selling well right now.）

Activate 就是单向的动词。Activate 的是人，exhibit 不能 activate 自己的，一定要有施动者。固然可以 activates itself，但是在这句里面后面跟着的是 activates the animated functions of the piece，那就不是 exhibit 能够做到的事。（Exhibit 只是展览，和展览里面的机件不一样的。如果真的是 self-activation 就要说出来是这样的。）

我注意到很多同学做这些题目时，对语法过于注重而忽略了语义。其实两样都要注意的，因为语法与语义常常都是缠在一起的，有些语法功能不能用，纯粹是因为语义的缘故。

就是因为 activate 是需要很明显的施动者，所以不能用 encourages visitors to "touch" each exhibit 来做主语的。这是可以用 which 指代前面分句的例：

The Virtual Leonardo Project encourages visitors to “touch” each exhibit, which has the effect of involving them much more deeply in each object, thereby instilling a greater understanding.

我发现还没有解释到为什么 D 那里是用 activate 而不是 activates。这并不是因为 activate 的主语是 visitors。D 是这样的：

这里 visitors 是 encourages 的宾语，不是 touch 与 activate 形式上的主语。要明白这半句话的结构，首先要知道 and 连接什么。是谁 activate？当然是 visitors。但是这里 visitors 不是主语，不过却是 touch 与 activate 的施动者。所以 and 是把 touch 和 activate 连起来的，这表示 activate 和 touch 一样，是跟在 to 后面的，那当然要用 infinitive form，不用变化。这就是为什么 activate 后面没有 s。
