It is not a secret that lots of students write their own recommendation letters. If you are writing your own recommendation letters you really need to be careful. ‘
1) Do NOT use extremes. For example…do not say things like “XXX was the best student I have ever come across” or “XXX was the best student in my XXX class”. Instead, you can say “XXX was ONE of the best students” or “XXX was among the best students in my class”. Anyone reading my posts should know that I work in MIT’s admissions office. Last year, I read multiple essays from difference candidates that were from the SAME SCHOOL, used the SAME PROFESSOR, took the SAME CLASS… And in the recommendation letter, all of these letters said “XXX was the best student I have ever had”. YES I often catch mistakes like this. Yes admissions committees will catch mistakes like this. The minute we see sometimes like this, we immediately know 1)You wrote the recommendation letter 2)The professor probably doesn’t even know you and does not care Or 3)The professor is not credible. Your application takes a BIG hit, and your chances of receiving an acceptance letter is very low. |
