正确答案是E.  前边的cut into...可以理解，但that从句除了啰嗦外，语法没有错误。 而E改变了原文的时态。were arising改成了arose. 所以选了A原句。 不知道大家是怎么理解的？在语句啰嗦和时态变化中，到底应该更重视哪个？OG的解释也基本上是说原句啰嗦，E更简洁，但却没有提及时态的转换。

that 从句肯定是要用过去式，至于具体是过去进行时还是一般过去是，从逻辑上理解，没有太明显的错误。所以这个先放一边。
然后从句子的简洁性来讲：
E： The first trenches cut into a 500-acre site  明显比The first trenches that were cut into a 500-acre site简洁。还有，evidence +that 从句比较常见。

多读几遍，从语感上也能读出区别。

楼上，平行不是看形式上的对称。

这里的平行结构是arise (simultaneously with) but (independently of).

后面the more celebrated city-states是宾语。

那这时如果要使两种描述并列，唯一的办法就是：
