急！新prep1-171 But后面可以接instead吗？

我是由新prep1-171题产生的一点联想和疑惑：

One of the primary distinctions between our intelligence with that of other primates may lay not so much in any specific skill but in our ability to extend knowledge gained in one context to new and different ones.
A. between our intelligence with that of other primates may lay not so much in any specific skill but
B. between our intelligence with that of other primates may lie not so much in any specific skill but instead
C. between our intelligence and that of other primates may lie not so much in any specific skill as
D. our intelligence has from that of other primates may lie not in any specific skill as
E. of our intelligence to that of other primates may lay not in any specific skill but

我知道C是对的，B错在搭配不对，应用between…and …,  not so much…as…的搭配。

(1)但是由选项B的but instead, 我联想到如果在其他的句子中，若前面说了半句，后面的半句大概是要表达和前面相反的情况，用but instead…来连接，这种用法，有对的可能性吗

（2）还有，instead… 和instead of…的用法到底是怎样？我只知道前者是副词，后者是介词短语。

(3)其实我还想问一个我一直不太懂的用法，就是连词（如and, but）后面可以直接加介词或介词短语吗？

(4)而且在做题中，我发现一般碰见as well as和and同时存在的时候，正确选项基本都是选含and的。那as well as 到底该怎么用呢？

望牛牛指教，谢谢～我现在整天逃课专攻G呢。但感觉还是学的不太明白，过几天就要考G了，可是心里还是没底。最后几天怎样复习sc，会更有效率呢？

还有，最近主要复习了语法和逻辑，没太看阅读。现在感觉我阅读还不如以前了，错很多，没有感觉了，我知道牛牛的那些阅读方法，可是到自己实际做题的时候，就不会应用了，阅读该怎么学能快速提高呢？

1、个人认为不能, 因为1）instead（used to say what is done, when you have just said that a particular thing is not done）表“而是”，和but的意思有重复，放在一起不简洁wordy，2）表“不是，而是”的固定用法是：not...but rather...
2、instead表“而是”，作副词用，例：the economy will not experience recession, instead, it will come in for a soft landing.
instead of（used to say what is not used, does not happen etc, when something else is used, happens）表“而不是”，作介词用，后面只能跟名词，例：I think you'd call it a lecture instead of a talk（=not a talk）。补充一下，这里instead of可以和rather than互换，两者的区别在于前者只能跟名词，后者可以跟名词和动词(I decided to quit rather than accept the new rules.)
