1.What is awkward in sentence #1 is not the use of "for" but that of the rest part,ie. a recovery finally.More exactly,it is the modifier "finally" that makes the choice dead.If you use it to modify the noun,recovery,then remember the rule:adverb can not modify a noun,only an adjective can.
2."It is not until ...that..."is idiom that represents a strong feeling of emphasis.In chinese it can be called "Qiang Diao Ju",quite familiar right? Keep this in mind:When encounter this kind of question,do not seperate "not" and "until" apart.There exists no why but the idiom,the tone of language.
