Opportunity cost contrasts to accounting cost in that accounting costs do not consider forgone opportunities.

Consider the case of an MBA student who pays $50,000 per year in tuition and fees at a private university. For a two-year MBA program, the cost of tuition and fees would be $100,000. This is the monetary cost of the education.

However, when making the decision to go back to school, one should consider the opportunity cost, which includes the income that the student would have earned if the alternative decision of remaining in his or her job had been made. If the student had been earning $60,000 per year, $120,000 in salary would be foregone as a result of the decision to return to school.

Adding this amount to the educational expenses results in a cost of $220,000 for the degree.

5 years.

My old buddy got his JD with NYU, on the loan of Citibank. He joined a New York City insurance company after law school. That was year 2003, and now, 2008 came already, he still can not clear his loan. The loan is 100,000 US$.

So, if you have no scholarship that covers at least half tuition and depend totally on loan, consider 5 years to get debt free.

And during the first 5 years after your MBA, consider no house and maybe no nice cars if you stick in NYC and want to pay back the loan as early as possible.

My old buddy now is still live in Jersey City, ride Jersey Path to go to work. NO house, no car.

Your model's wrong. You should use the incremental NPV method instead--- you are ignoring the sunk cost (such as your living expense, which you'll have to spend no matter what).

first of all, it depend on how much you pay for your MBA. let us say $100K for two-year full-time MBA. you can either pay off up-front or take loan (10 year pay-back period means addtional $20k for interests in general).

second, it depend on your full-time job industry and position. For top 5 investment banking firm, if you are not fired recently or fired but find another job very soon,  you could pay back your spendings on MBA within two years. for consulting industry may be 3-5 years. for corporation, more than 5 years.

Third, your choices on 401k, insurance and tax (no much choice on tax. some difference if you are self-employed).  for example, you can put 2%- 14% of your income to your 401k.

Last but not least, your spending and savings habit.  depend on your personal and family situation.
