因为全文都是过去时，突然出现make，没有可以呼应的地方。

D 当然不对了，你都说了全文是过去式，怎么突然出现make呢？？

E 是Inflated to do sth 的结构

如果换成 and would make就对吧

make可以是 would make 的省略阿
burst of smoke would appear and make an already terrified passenger .....

我的理解是这样的，应该选E。

New items developed forautomobiles in the 1997 model year included a safer airbag, which, unlike previous air bags, （用来修饰air bag）eliminated the possibility that aburst of smoke would appear (when the bag inflated) to make an alreadyterrified passenger think the car was on fire.( 修饰 possibility)

意思是这个新式的安全气囊减少了在汽车排出烟时安全气囊的膨胀给乘客带来的以为是起火的恐慌的可能性。

是bag inflated 使得 already terrified passenger think the car was on fire. 所以应该是to make.
