有两道题看起来有点矛盾,不懂,请教

一题的正确答案是"To develop more accurate population forecasts, demographers would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economic determinants of fertility.";另一题是"Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than in any previous election."
为什么前面这题"more than"后面有"they do",而后面这题"a greater proportion than"后面没有"it was"?
另外为什么前面这题要有个"would"?
请各位不吝赐教!

如果是be动词，在比较中需要省略，而实义动词则不可省略。

在我看来，这个would并不是必须的。加上后更能表达一种虚拟语气而已。（关于这点我不100%确定）

这个题关键要看清是谁和谁在比，实际上是in the presidential campaign of 1992和in any previous election.在比较。另外有一个例子OG12-138题，你可以体会一下：
In no other historical sighting did Halley's Comet cause such a worldwide sensation as in its return of 1910-1911.(原句是as did its return in 1910-1911)
