答案是E，选出来很容易，但是我想问一下C选项，to begin seriously to study为什么awkward and wordy？还有were to begin 这个用法对吗？

首先逗号之后应该接句子，C并不是一个句子,缺主语。
begin to do 和begin doing是固定用法，不能再begin和to do（或doing）之间插入任何修饰成分，所以seriously应该放在begin的前面。
应该不是were  to begin，C选项应该是 XX  (were  scholars and critics) to begin...这里to begin是不对的,应该直接跟begin

OG解释说until almost 1900 放错位置，那是不是gmat语法中的状语一定要放后面的？
还有OG对每一个选项的解释是不是没有把所有的错误都列出来？ A选项中begin seriously to study也在begin to do中间插入东西了，这算不算一个错误？

那个until almost 1900有歧义吧，是做前面分句的时间状语呢还是做后半分句的时间状语？
我感觉吧，GMAT很多句子如果非要从语法上来解释很累人的，它其实很多是要求我们知道句子的逻辑意思
另，我也觉得C是一个倒装，s and c是主语。。继续求解答。。

until的位置放错了,我认为是因为这个时间状语即可以修饰前面,也可以修饰后面.

be to do 是将来时，WERE TO BEGIN...是过去将来时（WOULD），不符合NOT UNTIL的句意和用法吧

过去将来时为什么就不对呢？
另外OG为什么说它awkward and wordy？
