我觉得还是从语意出发。

宾语（what引导的从句）what是含有一个成分，就是后面所说的 a giant fungus

a giant fungus [ that is an interwoven filigree ( of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles ) ] spawned... and extending
语意是说一个交织的精致物品，后面”蘑菇和像根一样的触角（交织成前面的filigree）”是修饰 fungus

（个人本来认为解释的部分也是主系表，指的 是一个东西A is B，修饰A或者修饰B是一样，请NN指导！）
这里说的 is 指的是自然事实，而且跟前面recently符合
后部分an filigree spawned and extending是 n＋分词做定语形容前面的名词。

这样整句话的结构就是：SVO，N [that...]＋分词定语
N在这里就是前面所说的what里代指的成分，整个后面是同位语，不能是句子

如此并结合OG解释得出：
A，OG解释明确说了是分词。这个精致物(OG解释为过去)孵出(by)通过一个孢子，不是被动，并仍在扩展extending，没有提到这个fungus已经死亡了。
B，Extends不是分词的形式，是动词，那么这里只能是跟is平行，但是跟is平行的话：应该是fungus that extends，如果没有that，就会变成主谓结构，这样第二部分也是一个句子，明显不对

插入语1：of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles，介宾短语，表明filigree的属性，是一种M和RT
插入语2：spawn by a single fertilized spore，意思是由单个受精卵产卵，由by的提示可知filigree是被spore受精的， 而不是主动去射精的。所以跟filigree只能是动宾关系，用V-ed形式连接
插入语3：extend for more than 30 acres，意思是延伸出去30亩。 filigree不可能被延伸出去30亩，只能是自己主动延伸出去30亩，所以filigree和extend的关系是主谓关系，用V-ing形式连接。

spawned 表示被动extending 表示主动都是修饰这个interwoven filigree的
这个题目很难，我也使想了很久才弄明白

首先，B肯定不对，从平行的角度上看，应该是分词平行而不是动词平行。

一般很容易选C(我就是死这儿了），因为spawned和extended平行。可是逻辑上不符合。因为这什么倒霉真菌蘑菇到今天依然活的好好的。ETS显然不想灭绝濒危生物。

C最好，因为用extending表明从过去的一个小孢子，扩展到今天有30英亩那么大。是从过去到现在一直进行的动作。最合适。

OG上面说的很明白啊。-ing形式表明从过去到现在一直进行。而且原文强调的是一种对比，从过去那么点儿到现在的对比。你仔细看下A选项和C选项的解释。
此外，我并不觉得spawned并不是被动吧？从一个孢子演变，而不是被一个吧？

我当时选的是B。请问为什么extend不可能与is平行呢？也就是说a giant fugus that is... and extends...

这题，我同意楼上。为什么不可以说a giant fugus  extends。。。？

我是这么认为的,
如果要A GIANT FUNGUS EXTENDS
在EXTEND的前面一定要有THAT的,没有肯定要出问题

但是EXTENDING是因为时间还是因为主动的原因
我强烈认为是主动的原因才用EXTENDING,而不是什么时间延续性
