我在想是不是shields和items实质上指的是同一个东西 所以楼上有G友认为 protecting做主语shields的目的 与og认为做items的目的其实是一样的

同意加州女孩观点。看过那些帖子不知道是否可以做这样的总结：
1.在有逗号的情况下，现在分词是修饰前面主语，而过去分词则是就近修饰；
2.而没有逗号的情况下，两者都是就近修饰
不知道是不是hasty generalization，欢迎大家拍砖

过去分词用来修饰名词, noun modifier；又没有逗号都一样的；

Ing分词分2种情况：
comma + ing形式，通常是修饰前面整个句子的（主语+谓语）；其实到底修饰什么要根据句子逻辑意思来判断的；
没有逗号的话，那么就近修饰

就一句话：分词短语可做定语修饰宾语，但不能修饰介宾短语。
第一题是by the English navigator Captain James Cook 属介宾短语，不是naming....可以修饰的。

过去分词的修饰和现在分词的修饰不能混淆
