Hi Jason, sorry to bother you, but i hv some question about Wharton.
-my Gmat score is fair, but my verbal is 78%, do you think i should retake the test or just go ahead try my luck?
-my current vision of my career is: go for b-school then go to consulting firm (IT related), eventually find partner to open a small consulting firm, will this vision be challenged by far too "天马行空"?
thanks in advance~

Hi Nicky,

I would only redo it if you have time. Otherwise, forget it. 78% is not that far off from 80%.

As for your vision, any vision is fine. More important is whether you have a good plan to achieve it, and you truly know why you want that goal (and whether it's really what you want/ is suitable for you)

Good luck,
Jason

Hi,Jason..It's the first time i post questions here ;-)
In the past few months, i feel i have difficulty in managing time. I usually have three to four things to do during a rather short period. But i always can't tell which things are more urgent/important. Like this spring, i had to prepareCFA exam and graduation thesis at the same time. I was toooo eager to succeed in these two things ( high pass the exam and then also do well in thesis).... Yet i couldn't do well... worked hard on thesis and set aside test prep for weeks, and it turns out i scored well in the paper and failed the exam -(   I was frustrated and expect to improve time management ability cos the super busy semester appraches. Hope Jason can give me some advice.
Many thx ~

Interesting that this thread seems turning into a EAP, Employee Assistance Program... :-)

I'm specifically expecting a in-depth introduction from you about the entreprenuership & VC classes and opportunities provided by Wharton. Be more specific, how would you compare Wharton to Stanford and MIT on this aspect? I wish I could get into VC/PE industry and stay there for a while to understand thoroughly how such business run, then move out to start up my own business. By the way, I'm a pure IT people with 9 years engineering and PM experience.  Relatively old applicant. :-)

Thanks in advance.

yelu1988> There are lots of time management programmes out there, no? Check out "Getting Things Done", really helps me cut down stress!

icy32> Reminds me of a UChicago essay in my year:
"The Sudanese author Tayeb Salih wrote, “Turning to left and right, I found I was halfway between north and south. I was unable to continue, unable to return.” If he is unable to choose, the character faces the threat of being frozen in place or torn between two states. Describe a halfway point in your life—a moment between your own kind of “north” and “south.” Tell us about your choice, your inability to choose, or perhaps your folly in thinking there was even a choice to be made."

Good luck (I wrote this essay and got in!)

hughlv> I did not pursue entrepreneurship or VC at Wharton... So unfortunately I'm not the right person to ask, sorry. (PS, even if I did, I couldn't compare them with Stanford or MIT- not because I don't want to, but because I didn't attend them and I wouldn't have had much basis for comparison)

Hi Jason, This is the first time I ask a question here. Thank you for your attention.

Through your posts, I find I share a lot of thoughts with you. The biggest one is that I don't want to pursue the major fields that a MBA is supposed to do-investment banking, consulting, PE and VC. I've working in a commercial bank for quite a long time, and want to return to the commercial banking after graduation. I think this path is better for me than to switch to the four major fields, with the regard of my experience in the commercial banking and the fact that I'm not young enough.

So, my first question is: What kind of attitude the b-schools adcom will have to an applicant's career plan of going to a commercial bank? Is it too moderate, not ambitious at all?

My second question is: Are there many job opportunities in commercial banking in b-schools, for example, in Wharton? I wonder whether my target jobs are available in b-schools.

Many thanks for your time.

yamece> Any career goal is perfectly fine, as long as you can demonstrate why you'll need an MBA along the way. And there can be many reasons (business skills; networking; etc.)

That applies to commercial banking too.

There aren't as many employers in that space that visit campus- simply because demand isn't as high. However, you'll probably find that it's very easy to make appointments to talk to recruiters from these industries, just because they know the value of an MBA (commercial banking is still banking!). So I wouldn't worry at all about this.
