我觉得前半段的修饰成分是个时间状语从句，后半段的修饰是个定语从句，不知道这样算不算不对称，但好像是不如E对仗工整

两个they 指代不明确？不知道，但觉得就算不考虑后半段的they，前半段那个好像又可以指代MICE又可以指代brains

而且诶我感觉这个被动状态的分词不能省略主语和系动词，否则会引起歧义，就是when从句的被动态被理解成主动了

我想原文要强调的是大脑的长大和神经元的增加，the brain growing in mice和the neurons increasing in canaries的关键词是brain和neurons,至于DE的区别，就是when从句的错误吧

对，they没什么问题.

刚到家，我把状语从句省略的条件问题贴出来：
第一点是毫无疑问的：逻辑主语等于句子主语
第二点也是必须的：从句的谓语必需是be（没要求主句谓语也必需是be！，换句话说可以看成是省略了一个be），且从句主语和谓语要么同省，要么同留。
