我认为选E，原题没有转折although得语气。还有，D选项强调的是graphite changes into the substance,因为although 强调的就是后者。而E强调的是温度是否被移除，两者强调的重点不同，而原文是强调温度是否移除，所以选E

理由3: thus 的其中的一个意思可以表示"in this way", thus 是副词, 副词thus修饰动词remain.
理由4:逻辑意思:

只一点 GMAC不认可when引导条件状语从句的方式 而同时这里又没有时间状语引导的根据，由前后句平行原则
故此 D更好
