recession must be followed by that 这里many were fearing应该是做定语从句的，那么recession在定语从句里是处于宾语的位置，那that应该可以省略啊，为什么说不能省呢？（且不管many were fearing这个表述是不对的。。。）求解！谢谢~~

按我们的以前受到的英语教育是可以省略的，但通过这个解释这是不是暗示GMAC认为在正式书面语中即使名词在定语中做宾语，关系代词也是不能省略的

通常是可以省的，比如这道题
267.During the nineteenth century Emily Eden and Fanny Parks journeyed throughout India, sketching and keeping journals forming the basis of news reports about the princely states where they had visited.

(B) that were forming the basis of news reports about the princely states

但是如果是宾语从句里面放一个定语从句的话就不行了。。。

that不可省略的情况：

1.两个或两个以上由that引导的宾语从句，只能省略第1各that，其它的不能省略。

2. 介词后的that引导的宾语从句不可省略。

3. that宾语从句置于句首时，不可省略


that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come
这句句子是宾语从句里面套定于从句，所以后面的那个that不能省。。。。

到目前为止，这个是我觉得最有可能的理由，谢谢slamshady~

还有，我不同意上面所说的这个recession后面跟的是同位语从句，我还是觉得是定语从句。后面的many had feared earlier in the year 不是解释recession的内容的，而是起到修饰recession的作用，是什么样的recession，是人们以前所担心会到来的recession，而不是“经济或金融或anything会怎样萧条怎样崩溃”的recession
