CUMBA/MIT MSc in Management Studies Dual Degree Option

We are pleased to announce that the MIT Sloan School of Management has invited the CUHK Faculty of Business Administration as one of their cooperating schools to select top MBA students to study in the MIT Sloan Master of Science in Management Studies (MSMS) Program. This program is a 9-month, academically geared program that leads to a MIT masters degree. It allows students who have completed their first year of MBA studies at a non-US institution to study at MIT Sloan and gain expert knowledge on a specific area of management through writing a master thesis and taking courses that support the thesis work.

Under this study option, CUHK MBA will recognize up to 21 units of successfully completed coursework taken under the MIT MSMS programme toward the fulfillment of CUHK MBA degree requirements. Recognition will be granted for coursework in which students achieve an overall grade of B or above during their studies at MIT. Further details of the Dual Degree Option will be available shortly. For additional information,

Admissions

The Master of Science in Management Studies program is open to applicants who have completed or are in the process of completing an MBA or equivalent degree program at a non-US institution. Applicants from our international partners and cooperating schools are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants will be evaluated based on performance in their MBA or equivalent degree program, recommendations, application essay, and other criteria. To be considered, applicants must demonstrate stellar undergraduate and graduate school grade point averages as well as GMAT, GRE, and/or TOEFL scores.

Apply

A complete application consist of the following:

Application Form

The application form for fall term 2010 will be available in late Fall 2009. Please keep checking the website for updates. MSMS 2010 intake applications will be due on February 19, 2010.

Recommendations

Please obtain three recommendations on your behalf. Two should be from faculty members who are able to speak definitively of your academic achievement and potential. The third recommendation should be from an individual, e.g., work supervisor or manager, who is able to speak with certainty about your professional achievement and potential.

Please choose recommenders who are able to provide specific answers to the following questions:

  • How long and in what capacity have you known the applicant?
  • How does the applicant stand out from others in a similar capacity?
  • Please give an example of the applicant's impact on a person, group, or organization.
  • Please give a representative example of how the applicant interacts with other people.
  • Which of the applicant's personal or professional characteristics would you change?
  • Please tell us anything else you think we should know about this applicant.

Recommendations should be up to two pages each. Recommenders may submit recommendations either by e-mail or through the mail. Please allow sufficient time for your recommenders to write your evaluation and ask them to e-mail or mail it to the MSMS Program Office. Please advise your recommenders to use your formal full name as it is entered on the application, not your nickname, so that we can match it with your application.

Academic Records (Transcripts)

You should mail in your official academic records or transcripts to the program office (see Contact Us section for address information). Submit transcripts from all universities where you received undergraduate and graduate degrees. Transcripts need to be in English and should be accompanied by an explanation from each university of their grading scale for the program office to easily interpret.

Essay

We are interested in learning the reason why you are choosing to pursue an advanced degree at MIT Sloan School of Management, given that you will likely attain an MBA degree from your home institution, and what your concentration area will be to earn this degree. For the essay, please describe what topic of management studies interests you and that you want to study and write a thesis about (see Curriculum section for details). Please limit the essay to 1,000 words or less.

Test Score(s)

GMAT or GRE

Curriculum

The MSMS degree is a 90-unit curriculum with a 66-unit requirement to be completed in MIT coursework. This includes courses at MIT Sloan, other MIT departments, and Harvard University. Preference will be given to applicants from international business schools with established collaboration with MIT Sloan.

No single characteristic in the application is more important than any other. An area of weakness — for example, a low score on the GMAT — may be successfully offset by strengths in other areas.

What is the application deadline?
The application is due 12 noon Pacific Standard Time (2000 Greenwich Time) on Thursday, January 15, 2009.

Qualifications/Criteria

What are the general criteria and desired qualifications for admission?

General Criteria
We look for students whose personal characteristics suggest that they will make the most of the opportunities at MIT, both in academic and non-academic areas. We also seek those whose presence will enhance the experience of other students. Therefore, we value characteristics such as motivation, involvement, interpersonal skills, communication skills, leadership, analytical skills, and tolerance of uncertainty.

Desired Qualifications
The Admissions Committee looks for excellence — applicants with high academic potential and achievement, and strong motivation and leadership potential. High academic potential and achievement are normally reflected in high GMAT scores, excellent academic records, and recommendations that go beyond the usual polite endorsement. Ability to achieve is usually shown in recommendations, your essay, and relevant experience.

Do I need work experience to apply?
No. While work experience is not a requirement for admission, some experience is helpful to get the most out of the MIT Sloan experience. People who already have a framework against which to apply their education and to understand workplace issues generally are able to get more out of the program and contribute to classroom discussions.

Visits/Interviews

What is the policy for visiting the MIT Sloan?
You are always welcome to visit the School. Contact the program office about your intended visit and we'll schedule classroom visits.

How do I get to the MIT Sloan? Where should I stay?
Directions to MIT Sloan
Hotels and accommodations

What is the interview policy?
We will selectively interview individuals who submit an application to the M.S. in Management Studies program. These interviews will be by invitation and at our initiative only; not all applicants will be interviewed.

Costs

What is the tuition and cost breakdown?
The 2009-2010 tuition for incoming students is $52,000 plus applicable fees. Additional costs for housing, food, medical insurance, books, and personal expenses can be approximately $30,000 for a single student but may vary significantly depending on lifestyle and other personal considerations.

Curriculum

What subjects/areas of study are offered at MIT Sloan?
A list of courses offered at the MIT Sloan is available on the MIT Web pages. You should also visit our Curriculum pages for a description of our curriculum and the four sample areas of concentration.

What are the degree requirements for the M.S. in Management Studies Program?
Students spend two academic terms in residence and must meet the Institute's requirement of a minimum of 66 units of graduate level credit, including at least 42 H-level units. Students also must complete a Master's thesis (24 units) in their concentration. Most MIT Sloan subjects range from 3 to 12 units based on an approximation of weekly class hours, lab or thesis units, and outside preparation time.

Can I count credits I've taken at my home institution toward this M.S. in Management Studies degree?
No, you cannot count transfer credits toward the MIT degree

What is the teaching style for professors at MIT Sloan?
MIT Sloan faculty employ a variety of teaching methods, including lecture, case study, team projects, writings, problem sets, presentations, company visits, guest speakers, and other theoretical and applied teaching methods. The teaching method used in a class is the choice of the individual professor and is chosen to best facilitate learning for that subject matter.

What is the average class size?
Elective subjects typically have 25 to 60 students (although a few number as high as 90), and seminars may have even fewer students. Your Master's thesis work will be an individual endeavor with the guidance of your thesis advisor.

Student Life

How many students does the program plan to accept?
Because of the special nature of the program and the relationships between MIT Sloan and the partner schools, we intend to keep the number to a dozen or so highly qualified, international students.

What student clubs exist at MIT Sloan? What if I want to start a new club?
Each year there are about 70 student organizations and clubs at MIT Sloan. The clubs sponsor events, invite and host speakers, and conduct forums. There are also intramural sports teams which compete within the MIT intramural system, as well as against other MBA programs in the northeast and nationally. If there is an area that interests you, but is not represented through a student organization, we encourage you to start one.

Where do most students live?
Most MIT Sloan students choose to live off campus. The MIT Off-Campus Housing Office is an excellent resource for locating possibilities. Affordable housing can be found close to the campus and near the public transportation system.

On-campus housing is also available. Demand exceeds supply, so a lottery system is used to allocate both the single student and married student housing units.

Career Development

Can I use the resources of the Career Development Office (CDO)?
Yes, the services of the CDO will be available to students in the M.S. in Management Studies program.
