参照ajmclean提供的LONGMAN词条可以知道，lack 作动词时后不能接in/of，那么答案应该是在A和C中选择。我认为A更好些。

A的what was lacking in是错的，因为is lacking in的主语一定要是人

B是否可以这样理解：lack后面接的不是in，而是what，只是因为倒装被提前了。还原what所指代的，语序应该变成he lacked something in technical skill。这样理解的话，whatever就不对了，因为whatever是泛指。something需要是特指，所以用what

make up for 和make up方面的区别不是很清楚。

B和D之间的区别主要就是那个for，我当时就觉得made up for比较好，所以选了D。

关键估计也就在这个for上面。

看了这么多，我最终也没搞清楚这个题目是B还是D。不过我个人觉得，这个题目是不是更多考WHAT 和WHATEVER的指代意思多啊，这个题目在考make up和make up for的差别吗？

lack的意思解决了。其他我没觉得有任何一个人说清楚这个题目的解释了。
