longman字典

! Do not use the verb

lack

before 'in' or 'of':

We lack ideas (NOT We lack in/of ideas).

However, you can use the phrases

be lacking in

and

a lack:

We are lacking in ideas

OR

We have a lack of ideas.

lack做名词才能接of Does their apparent lack of progress mean they are not doing their job properly?

make up (do not need sth)
make up for sth
Ed was the original DIY filmmaker, and while he lacked technical skill, he more than made up for it.

9.Baker was perhaps not the most gifted soloist in the orchestra, but
the conductor felt what was lacking in his technical skill was more
than made up by the passion with which he played the music.
(A) what was lacking in his technical skill was more than made up by
(B) what he lacked in technical skill was more than made up by
(C) whatever was lacking in his technical skill was more than made up by
(D) whatever he lacked in technical skill was more than made up for by
(E) whatever he lacked in technical skill he more than made up by
如果选D,那么变成了whatever he lacked in technical skill was more than made up for by the passion with which he played the music.

这里没有少 make up for sth的sth.

whatever he lacked in technical skill was more than made up for

其实可以看成 more than made up for whatever he lacked in technical skill

参照ajmclean提供的LONGMAN词条可以知道,lack 作动词时后不能接in/of,那么答案应该是在A和C中选择。

A的what was lacking in是错的,因为is lacking in的主语一定要是人

还原what所指代的,语序应该变成he lacked something in technical skill。

make up for 和make up方面的区别不是很清楚。

B和D之间的区别主要就是那个for,我当时就觉得made up for比较好,所以选了D。
