破解版给的解释是：they指代不清,可能指代quantities或者spices.

但我觉得E的问题是they根本无指代，因为前面的spices是修饰usage的。

感觉类似于In 1998, it was a year……。错误的原因在于in 1998 是修饰全句的时间状语，所以it 不能指代作为状语的1998一样。 
大家觉得呢？open to discuss……
