The assertion at issue is that managers who uphold the highest ethical standards are the most effective leaders. I can not agree this point any more. It is apparent that a leader who is lacking of ethical standard is also prone to apply unethical business strategies. Though those unethical strategies may bring surplus benefit to individual enterprises during a short period, they would finally bring the companies to their knees and severely deteriorate the business environment worldwide. First, some plausible unethical business strategy will impair a company in a long run. Take the chemical company in my hometown as an example. After several years’ recession, the company employed a new general manager in the hope that he could bring about a surge of revenue to the company. In order to reach the financial goal, the leader enlarged the amount of products, as well as waste water which heavy exceeded the current disposal capability of the company. To avoid the large amount of expense in disposal equipment, the leader commanded the employees to pour the unprocessed waster water to the adjacent river by stealth at night. This immoral behavior brought supposed profit to the company at the beginning, until the water of the river was found unprecedented muddy and smelly. After the inspection of environmental experts, the unethical action was uncovered. As a result, the company was forced to be out of business by local government and the leader was fined seriously. Second, unethical behaviors can undermine the business environment worldwide. For example, some unethical business activities like delivery delay or check default would deplete the overall credit of the participants in international trading. In this case, a high premium has to be paid by those participants to reduce the credit and default risk; this significantly increases the cost of the whole industry. However, somebody may contradict that not all unethical leadership could be spotted. I just want to borrow an observation from a wise past American president:”you can fool some of people all the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all the time.” In any business, once scandals at the top become known, the predictable outcome will be damaged reputation, lower worker morale, and, along with them, lost productivity. In conclusion, the shortcomings of unethical leadership significantly outweigh the benefit of it. On the contrary, leaders who implement high standard would enhance the value of their companies to the largest extent, and would be the most effective leaders. |
