1.on earth 限制了整句话,可以这么想，作者是想说只在地球上(而不是火星)，indication are believed to be ... 还是在地球上的indications 如何如何，应该是后者吧 On earth是修饰indication的

2应该是修饰rate 从ring中能看出the rate at which trees grow
