单复数不是问题. 后面的its指代的是this species, 所以这部分和前面的because it is (they are)无关. 这个句子没有明显的标志说明because后面要用单数;

相反, because it is similar 这句话我认为不通. similar必须得有对象才说得过去吧? "因为它太像了, 所以它身边的伙伴都是近亲", 逻辑不通.

that 后是定语从句，先行词不可能是the ant,所以不能和considers and thus does not 平行。而且确实竞争限制了它。（看前一句话是说它spread widely）

这个题最主要的争议应该在that 的先行词到底是什么？如果是the kind那么就应该是limits; 如果是struggles就应该是limit.

这要解决关于kind of 的用法：the(this\that) kind of +books  谓语动词用单数，因为强调种类

                            books of that kind  用复数，强调书

我的话是会觉得it在这里是做形式主语指代后面整句话。因为前面是个分号所以后面这句话一定要有主语，而that不能往后指代只能往前…
