答案选E，但我纠结在A上，理由如下：

选A：That引导主语从句，一个事实doubled the number...；excavating是动名词，表示一个过程。虽然这句话是被动，但是动作发出者不明确，可以用被动。

不选E：

1.The discovery of ... 名词＋of 的结构适用于of后面是简单词组的情况，如 The discovery of twenty-one ceramic dog figurines has nearly doubled the number of ...。如果不是简单词组，则应用从句：The discovery that twenty-one ceramic dog figurines were discovered during the ...。

2. excavation 为抽象名词，与excavating动名词意思相同，用法上有区别吗？

E里面 of之后加名词词组没什么妥吧。

The discovery of twenty-one ceramic dog figurines   has nearly doubled     the number of...    SVO很清楚

gmat里of +doing还有呢。the process of brewing the tea/the way of doing sth都还可以呢。只有这样的结构是被鄙视的：sth of sb doing

要改成同位语

the news that...../the process that.../

我觉得E比A就好在A用excavating，介词之后用优先用名词。

In GMAT test, if a word has its own none form, the none form takes precedence over "the+v-ing". but if the word doesn't have a none form, the+v-ing can be used to replace the none.

for example, I remember there is a phase in mock test: the splitting of the continent. Under such a circumstance, the+v-ing is acceptable
