I am surprised to see ppl aspiring to come to Mays. well I am not sure
if you have heard about the placement scenario and not to mention the
total inflexibility in this course. I am currently graduating here at
Mays Business School and I really regret my decision to come to this
college for many reasons..
1. with a very large number of indian students who get admitted here
and very few companies that hire internationals, its become quite
difficult to get a job( leave alone internships)
2. The dept has been indifferent towards the international students -
students do not have the flexibility to change their degree plan or
choose a course they like. (in fact students of fall 2008 batch were
forced to take electives!!)
3. The website is pretty misleading; there are so many courses that the
website mentions which are no longer offered. I came to know that only
after I joined & was really disappointed.
Well these are the facts, and I really hope you guys make an informed decision before choosing Mays for MIS.
Good luck with your application & Masters.
As weird as it is, I think I would agree with all of the poster's statements.
1. Only 1 company out of 10 or 15 that come to hire, are willing to
hire internationals... and in extremely small numbers. This problem may
not be TAMU-specific... But the dapartment/career center has done
absolutely nothing to try and convince any companies to allay their
fears and consider internationals. Whats saddening is that even out of
the 25 companies that are members of the MAYS CMIS (Center for MIS)
board, only 2 hire internationals from Mays!
I would agree too with what sln and Kilerwhale have said.. Try and wait
out the economic crisis before coming over for your masters. This is
surely not the best time.
2. The current department head is a joke. Although he has been a pain
in the wrong areas about several issues, like all the rules around the
degree plans, lack of enough courses, inflexibility about duration of
internships etc. , the biggest impact for the batch that is graduating
in Dec comes from his unwillingness to do anything about the STEM
issue. Mays MIS is NOT STEM classified and when the issue came into
prominence last year, he sent us all an email that said he doesn't
see a needto change the classification of the program... which BTW has 90%
international students! Also, Given the bad job scenario, several
students had approached the department about delaying their graduation
to May... But only a very select few were given that privilege!
Whereas, any other department in the entire university would not have
any problems with delayed graduations.
3. My honest suggestion to all of you would be to not look too much
into the website. As pointed out before, there are very limited number
of courses available and I am sure one of the Fall-08 entrants can post
the list of courses soon on this thread.
Yes, defintely think twice and then twice over before you choose (or even waste money on the app fee).
To sum it up, with graduation only a month away, I just can not wait to get the hell outta here...
good info, but I am still not sure why Syr could be a better option.
in my opinion, for MIS, CMU and IUB are definitely good programs even under this bad economic climate
