History of Brandeis University

  Founded in 1948, Brandeis University is named for the late Louis Dembitz Brandeis, the distinguished associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, and reflects the ideals of academic excellence and social justice he personified. Coeducational classes began on the site of the former Middlesex University in Waltham, Massachusetts, with 107 students and 13 faculty members.

  Guided for 20 years by its founding president, Abram L. Sachar, Brandeis grew quickly, establishing itself as an important national and international center for teaching and research. In 1962, only 14 years after the university's founding, Phi Beta Kappa accreditation was conferred. Under each succeeding president, the university continued to grow in breadth and stature, while maintaining the very human scale of its educational environment and its solid liberal arts focus.

  In 1985, Brandeis was elected to membership in the Association of American Universities, which represents the 62 leading research universities in the United States and Canada.

Congratulation!

The ranking clearly demonstrates that the International Business School has made swift progress since its founding in building a business education that can be compared with the best in the world.

With a curriculum focused on the global economy and a community drawn from 66 countries worldwide, the School offers outstanding opportunities for students to develop a career in the arena of international business.

eui

The Economist Intelligence Unit's ranking, which is based on feedback from close to 20,000 MBA students and graduates as well as data provided by schools, takes as its criteria four key reasons for doing an MBA:

  • opening new career opportunities and/or furthering current career;
  • personal development and educational experience;
  • increasing one's salary; and
  • the potential for networking.

The EIU ranks full-time MBA programmes on their ability to deliver these elements to students. It weights each element according to the average importance given to it by students surveyed over the past five years.

Student Profile

Completing an MBA in the United States was one of my long-standing ambitions. After having worked in Economic Development for almost five years, I started researching alternative career opportunities. I wanted to do something different -- something radical -- that would not only change my career, but would also change my life. Leaving Georgia, (thats the former Soviet Union, not Atlanta!), moving overseas and starting a career in international finance was an obvious choice. It was also obvious that I would not be able to make a move without an MBA. After doing my research on IBS, the choice became very clear. IBS had a number of unbeatable advantages: strong competence in international finance, small class size, location in one of the most important academic and financial centers of the US, and most importantly, an extraordinarily high percentage of international students.

I enrolled in IBS in 1999 and have never looked back at my decision. IBS has given me everything that I wanted. It helped me realize that investment banking was the field that I wanted to focus on within international finance, it gave me the tools that I use every day in my job as an Investment Banking Associate in Schroder Salomon Smith Barney (now part of Citigroup) and most importantly, with its unique international profile, IBS prepared me for a life within a global institution with global clients.

Upon graduation, I joined SSSBs Energy group in London. Among the 24 professionals in my group, there are 13 nationalities. The clients that we cover from London include large global oil and gas companies from Western Europe as well as oil and gas companies from Eastern Europe, Russia, Africa, Middle East and Asia. The diversity is tremendous, which is fascinating. However, managing communications and getting the right message across to the clients can be tricky. My experiences at IBS help me deal with this challenge with ease.

I have never looked back at my choice to enroll at Brandeis. This decision has given my career a tremendous boost and has changed my life. I am confident that anybody who is looking for the same experiences that I was, will find it at IBS.

Sincerely,

  Dato Sandroshvili

Brandeis International Business School Launches "Global Green MBA"

New Concentration Builds on Core Principles

WALTHAM, Mass. (September 3, 2008) - Brandeis International Business School (IBS) announced today a new "Global Green MBA" that will help it fulfill its core vision. The new concentration, the MBA in Socially Responsible Business, strengthens the position of IBS as a leading global business school.

"This new program will provide students the tools they need to build sustainable businesses in a complex global marketplace," said Marty Wyngaarden Krauss, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Brandeis.

The program is built on principles espoused by Justice Louis Brandeis a century ago. Brandeis advocated that businesses address broader social purposes beyond profits. The new MBA in Socially Responsible Business allows students to incorporate into their business study issues such as economic and social development, corporate governance, and environmental policy. They will do this in a uniquely global setting, with fellow students from over 60 countries and a curriculum rooted in international economics, finance, and business.

"Social and environmental challenges do not stop at national borders and solutions rely on international cooperation," said Bruce R. Magid, dean of Brandeis International Business School. "Our students will explore how businesses can differentiate themselves as they address pressing issues such as global warming and the development of clean technologies."

The MBA in Socially Responsible Business will be tightly integrated with existing core courses. Requirements will include specialized courses on corporations and communities, corporations and the environment, and a seminar exploring what "green" means in different contexts. In addition, students will complete a field project using financial and business tools they learned in core MBA courses. The program is being introduced this fall with a course entitled "Business and the Environment" as well as through a series of related presentations and panels. Details on the new concentration may be found at http://www.brandeis.edu/global/news/stories/green_mba.html.

"Corporate citizenship is not an add-on but is critical to business performance in today's increasingly transparent, globally integrated economy," said Stanley S. Litow, vice president of corporate citizenship and corporate affairs at IBM. "By integrating business and societal value companies can create a triple benefit. They create value for the company, value for the community and can attract the top talent that only wants to work for companies that view their societal responsibilities in this way. The business model of the 21st century places a significantly higher premium on creating sustainable growth and effectively integrating business and societal value. We salute Brandeis International Business School for underscoring the importance of corporate citizenship as a values-based business approach critical to how business is conducted in the age of global integration."
