1000 - 1500 words would be enough, if you have a very solid research idea, then submit a research proposal separately

the existence of PS already means that it could not be unimportant...the thing is, if you can not write an excellent PS that makes you stand out, try not to write a lousy PS that makes you stood out.

well, transcript and reputation of the school are definitely important, but the key is can you change it? so, focus on what you can change.

totally agree with xiaopanghu.

不过要*单*靠ps来stand out的（就是说推荐信学校都默默无闻的），我觉得还是要陶瓷来配合的，不然你的ps可能还没有被看到，你的application就被扔掉了。。。。。。反正要做点什么让你的ps被好好读到。

有时候时间很紧的时候，不可能所有申请都看。小秘就做初审工作，把所有牛推荐的申请留下。在剩下的申请里面，先定个学校的line,比如top50（这个数字纯粹做例子，可以忽略）以下的扔掉，然后定个gmat分数的line，比如650以下的扔掉（这个数字也是我拿来纯粹作例子的）。剩下的申请大家拿回来分一分赶快看。

I might use Times New Roman, 12, 1.5 space(maybe double is better, but I just think it is too spacious)...just be common,hoho

2800 is much too long, cut it by half, if it is me.

I think 1000 is standard.

看了各位的讨论，收获很大，多谢。

刚才看了一下我的SoP, 字数为899。

用双倍行距，12 Times New Roman后是4页，好像符合大家所说的字数要求。

但是有一点不是很明白，在这里借用LZ的帖子请教一下大家。

关于内容呢，因为我花了5个月时间在我老师的指导下写了篇working paper.

然后，我在SoP里用了1/3的篇幅描述了关于写这篇paper所遇到的问题和解决方法。

还有，因为我老师在研究方面对我影响比较大，可以说是他把我带上研究这条路，

所以，我在SoP里头也三次提到了他，不知这样是否可以？

最好不要写太多论文的东西：
1。这篇文章不一定符合招生老师兴趣
2。其次这篇文章也不是你独立写的，而且文章水平如何也难说，除非你老师是超大牛

但我觉得，要是不写点当时写working paper的一些事情，我就真的不知道该用什么来证明自己对研究的兴趣，
