in answer B, 'cost' is used. obviously, the subject is "americans". however, i think the subject should be the disease.

B seems obviously flawed, although it is the best choice of all:

1,     here, cost// lose ----> the americans cost the nation $$$ --- > illogical

2,     if     cost // afflicts ----->     cost should be
changed to singular and a comma should be employed before 'and thus'

个人感觉从GMAT的 只选相对正确的选项的精神来看, 应该是B, 是这重病情造成的,而且注意b 用的是and thus cost,是承接之前讲述的情况.

我觉得B是对的。。

1，cost ==〉有头痛的人花了 国家医疗的 $逻辑上讲的通啊。。（lz 提到的是OG11th-120）

2，thus 后面的cost 和 lost 是normal past tense 表已经发生的事情。是做Americans 的定语从句的谓语。。

如果按lz 说 “， and thus”必须补出主语。。所以B是对的。。

个人理解。。
