1）whereas可以做连词引导句子，而C中变成了 whereas...., if...and if.... 都是连词引导的从句了，主句就没有了。
   而A中则是 whereas..., an increas...and....主从句很清楚
2）they的指代，在C中they从逻辑意思上看是指代these fertilizers,而these fertilizers又指代synthetic fertilizers，也就是说“这个合成化肥会导致严重的环境问题”逻辑上：不是化肥造成环境问题(合成化肥如果不使用呢)，而是使用合成化肥造成环境问题。有点儿咬文嚼字的感觉了~

我对第一条有异议，怎么就没有主句了呢？

你不能说他没有主句啊，照这样说法，那岂不是所有条件句都没有主句了？？
我觉得还是得从代词指代和逻辑上来判断

1. 有存在主句，但是第一个if条件句存在夹心修饰的现象。
2. 第二点支持songlovegt的说法: C中明明有条件句，表明了只有用多了时候，化肥才造成环境问题。首先条件句已经肯定了使用，其次限定了条件，只有在增加了使用量的前提下，化肥造成环境问题才成立。
3. C里面第二个they问题不大，平行指代，让人很容易发现they是指代synethic fertilizers的.
4. C中虽然if条件句的表达(条件句主语省略)没问题，但是整句表达相当累赘 --> 大毛病。

因此1,4应该就是c不好的地方.

看了大家说了那么多，发表下自己的意见
个人觉得Whereas the use of ...., an increase in their use....更平行一些，句意十分清晰明显。是两种use的对比，一种是正常情况也就是合理使用时有.....等等好处，而另一种use也就是当这种使用increase的时候，会有.....等等坏处，而C这种对比就被弱化了很多，明显不如A好~

我觉得是，在这句“while if substituted for more traditional fertiliaers, this substitution....”中， “this substitution” 是“ if substituted”的主语， 也就是说 "if this substitution was substituted for ... " 好像不是很对...
不知道理解对不对....
